A splitter divides a single video signal into multiple video signals, sending them to numerous TVs simultaneously. This technology provides the means to watch programming from one source (e.g., cable box) on multiple TVs. Splitters are made in different video formats: HDMI, SDI, DVI, VGA, and other multifunctional analog signals. Some splitters offer audio extraction or embedding for external audio devices if required. Advanced splitters can convert signals to travel over Cat or fiber cables.
When long distances are involved there is a special splitter that is known as an HDBaseT splitter that requires a receiving unit located at each display using category cabling for the transmission/receiving signal. An added benefit is that many HDBaseT splitters now have PoE (Power over Ethernet) capabilities, allowing such devices to pass electrical power over a Cat cable to power the receiver.
Typically splitters are utilized in the commercial AV fields like malls, airports, plazas, stadiums and live events for digital signage purposes. However, its not totally uncommon to find a splitter in a home say for mirroring or duplicating the same Video Source to the Bathroom TV and the Outdoor TV to save time and money by eliminating the need for an extra cable box.
