KVM Extenders Explained

Joel R. Cruz • December 10, 2021

KVM stands for keyboard, video, and mouse. A KVM extender increases the distance a keyboard, monitor, and mouse can travel to connect to a computer. Since USB cables for mice and keyboards typically only reach 5 meters max, a KVM extender is a great way to send these connections over great distances. The main purpose of a KVM extender is to provide point-to-point computer extension along with remote access to computers. KVM extenders consist of two units: a transmitter that connects to a source (e.g., computer) and a receiver that connects to the devices (e.g., keyboard, monitor, and mouse).

KVM extenders benefit many applications in virtually any environment like schools, hospitals, call centers, retail stores, and corporate offices. Here are a few common applications where KVM extenders are beneficial:

Efficient, Clean Workspace

Reduces noise, heat, and most importantly, clutter from the work area by the ability to store employees’ computers in a single, centralized location. This frees up desk space and removes clunky system units, creating a computer-free work area.

Data Protection and Security

Protects computers from technical failures and damage. Locations like industrial environments have hazardous dust and debris, so storing the computers in a remote location will keep it sound.

KVM extenders also protect computers from unauthorized tampering in locations frequented by the public like internet cafes and libraries. Retail malls and lobby areas can have interactive touchscreen displays where you'll want to protect the computers by placing them in a secure, remote area.

Presentations and Live Events

During presentations or live events, a speaker could be on stage with a big screen for the audience to take in visual information. However, the stage is usually located at a distance from the computer operating the visuals. KVM extenders are able to transmit audio, video, and control signals from the computer allowing the speaker to control the screen's content on stage.

KVM Extender Solutions

Depending on what your needs are, BZBGEAR offers a number of KVM extenders that extend HDMI and USB signals. Here we'll look at two 4K KVM extenders: the BG-EXHKVM-70C which uses a single category cable to send KVM signals, and the BG-UHD-18GFE which uses a single-mode fiber optic cable.

BG-EXHKVM-70C

The BG-EXHKVM-70C is a 4K HDMI 2.0a KVM extender that transmits an uncompressed 4K@60Hz HDMI signal with zero latency to 230 ft (70 m) over a single category cable. Compatible with HDCP 1.4 and HDCP 2.2, this KVM extender supports HDR (YUV 4:4:4) as well as EDID passthrough resulting in seamless connectivity.

Through the USB 2.0 ports of the receiver, KVM functionality allows keyboard and mouse control of a remote computer or media player.

For external audio systems, extract digital audio via the S/PDIF port. Multiple audio formats are supported including DTS Audio, Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and LPCM.

The transmitter has a convenient HDMI loop-out for a local display. The plug and play connections and integrated surge protection ensure simple setup and long-term reliability.

BG-UHD-18GFE

If you're looking to extend KVM signals extremely long distances, then the BG-UHD-18GFE is your answer. Like the BG-EXHKVM-70C, this KVM extender transmits 4K@60Hz but does so using a single-mode fiber optic cable, extending KVM signals a whopping 6.25 mi (10 km) with transfer speeds up to 18Gbps.

BG-UHD-18GFE (Tx and Rx)

The BG-UHD-18GFE is HDCP 2.2 compliant and equipped with bi-directional IR and RS-232 pass-through that allows for source and display control. Audio support includes surround sound (up to 7.1 ch) or stereo digital audio.

With the ability to send high resolution video over long distances, the BG-UHD-18GFE KVM extender is ideal for sports venues, concert arenas, digital signage, and anywhere extreme range required.
