RTSP Troubleshooting – FAQ Style Quick Guide
RTSP is commonly used to stream video from IP cameras to software and hardware devices. If your RTSP stream isn’t working or looks unstable, follow the steps below. Still having trouble with your BZBGEAR equipment, contact support@bzbgear.com
RTSP Stream Not Connecting
Check the following:
- Confirm the RTSP URL is correct
(Example: rtsp://IP.ADDRESS:554/live/AV0) - Verify the username and password (If required)
- Make sure the camera and receiving device are on the same network
- Ensure the RTSP port (554) is not blocked by a firewall
RTSP Works in VLC but Not on Your Device
This usually means a compatibility issue.
Try:
- Switching the camera to H.264
- Lowering the resolution to 1080p or 720p
- Reducing the frame rate to 30 fps
- Lowering the bitrate
Black Screen or No Video
Common causes:
- Incorrect login credentials
- Unsupported codec or resolution
- Stream not fully initialized
Fix: Use H.264, 1080p or lower, and 30 fps.
Freezing, Glitching, or Dropping Video
This is usually caused by bandwidth or network issues.
Try:
- Using a wired Ethernet connection
- Lowering the bitrate
- Reducing frame rate from 60 fps to 30 fps
- Avoiding Wi-Fi if possible
Poor Video Quality (Blurry or Pixelated)
- Bitrate is too low for the resolution
- Increase bitrate slightly or
- Lower resolution or frame rate
Recommended RTSP Settings
For best results:
- Codec: H.264
- Resolution: 1080p or 720p
- Frame Rate: 30 fps
- Bitrate:
- 720p30 > 2–4 Mbps
- 1080p30 > 4–8 Mbps
Quick Fix Checklist
If RTSP isn’t working:
- Test the stream in VLC
- Switch to H.264
- Set resolution to 1080p or lower
- Reduce frame rate to 30 fps
- Lower the bitrate
