How to Test the IR Remote for Your BZBGEAR Device

Trevon Martin • July 23, 2026

If you are experiencing issues with your BZBGEAR IR remote, please follow these steps or contact BZBGEAR support.

1. Check if the Remote is Transmitting

Use a smartphone camera to see if the remote is sending an IR signal.

  • Open your phone's camera app (the front camera usually works best).
  • Point the front of the remote at the camera.
  • Press any button.

Expected: You should see the IR LED flash as a white or purple light on the screen.

If you don't see a flash:

  • Replace the batteries.
  • Try another button.
  • The remote may be defective.

2. Replace the Batteries

Weak batteries can reduce the IR signal, even if the remote still flashes.

  • Install fresh batteries.
  • Check that the battery contacts are clean.

3. Test at Close Range

Stand 3–6 ft (1–2 m) from the device and test again.

If it only works at very short distances, possible causes include:

  • Weak batteries
  • Weak IR transmitter
  • Dirty or blocked IR receiver
  • Bright ambient light

4. Check for Obstructions

IR requires a clear line of sight.

Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver, such as:

  • Furniture or equipment
  • Tinted glass
  • Decorative covers

5. Remove Possible Interference

Temporarily turn off or avoid:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Fluorescent or some LED lights
  • Plasma displays
  • Other IR emitters or extenders

6. Test Another Remote (If Available)

  • Try another compatible remote on the device.
  • Or test the remote on another known-working device.

This helps determine whether the issue is with the remote or the receiver.

7. If Using an IR Extender

  • Make sure the IR emitter is directly over the device's IR sensor.
  • Check that all cables are securely connected.
  • If possible, bypass the IR extender and test the remote directly.

8. Power Cycle the Device

  • Unplug the device for 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and test again.

Additional Checks for BZBGEAR Devices

  • Test the remote directly at the device before using any IR extension cables.
  • If a control system (Control4, Crestron, RTI, etc.) is connected, disconnect it temporarily and test again.
  • If you have multiple remotes, test each one to determine whether the issue is limited to a single remote.

If the problem continues, please email support@bzbgear.com.
