A question I get a lot while assisting with setting up equipment is, how are these going to work without a Wifi connection. And that’s okay! Many people assume that a network only works if Wi-Fi is involved. In professional AV systems, that’s not the case at all. PTZ cameras, joystick controllers, and other AV devices can communicate perfectly over a wired network, without using Wi-Fi.

Here’s how it works.

What “Being on a Network” Really Means

A network simply means that devices are connected in a way that allows them to communicate.

There are two main ways to do this:

• Wired networking (Ethernet cables)
• Wireless networking (Wi-Fi)

Wi-Fi is optional. If devices are connected using Ethernet cables, they are already on a network. As long as the devices are hardwired to the same network switch or even hardwired directly to one another, you have a network.

If it ever gets confusing with the technology aspect of it all, just remember what a “network” is: a group of interconnected elements that communicate or work together. 

The Role of a PoE Switch

A PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch is the central connection point for your system. A PoE isn’t necessarily required for AV; it’s just that a lot of PTZ cameras, controllers, and even encoder/decoders are capable of receiving power over Ethernet, so it helps. 

When you plug in:

• PTZ cameras
• A PTZ joystick controller
• Other IP-based AV equipment

the PoE switch:

• Connects all devices together
• Sends data between them
• Provides power to compatible devices through the same cable

How Devices Communicate Without Wi-Fi

Once connected to the PoE switch:

• Each device gets an IP address; most of the time, it’s a static IP that’s assigned, but some managed and even unmanaged network switches support DHCP for automatic IP assignment
• Devices can find and talk to each other
• Video streams, control commands, and status data flow through the wired network

Common functions like camera control, video streaming, and preset recall all work over Ethernet alone.

No wireless signal is involved.

Why Wired Networks Are Common in AV Systems

Professional AV systems usually avoid Wi-Fi because wired connections are:

• More reliable
• Faster and more stable
• Lower in latency
• Not affected by wireless interference

For PTZ cameras and real-time control, consistency matters more than convenience. Also, these systems are typically left off the main network or Wifi intentionally to avoid having to share bandwidth or for privacy/security purposes. 

Simple Analogy

Think of it like this:

• Wi-Fi is like talking across the room
• Ethernet is like using a wired intercom

Both allow communication, but wired connections are clearer and more dependable.
