Live Streaming Equipment
The foundation of any successful live stream is the equipment used for recording audio and video. If your stream has poor audio and video quality, you will struggle to maintain your viewer’s interest and gain new followers—regardless of how powerful your message is.

Cameras

Selecting the right equipment for your live stream begins with a high-quality camera. Well-engineered cameras are designed to improve operation for a user-friendly experience while impressing your viewers with professional video quality.

Have a good idea of your existing infrastructure, required connection types, and how the camera will be used before choosing your camera. Consider the size of your sanctuary and where the camera will be placed - larger spaces may require a 20x or 30x optical zoom lens to capture the desired shot.

Adding multiple cameras along with a joystick controller and video switcher is simple, yet effective way to add production value to your stream. With the push of a button, switch between multiple cameras for closeup shots to wide views when the speaker moves across the stage. Inspire your remote viewers by transitioning from shots of the band or praise leaders to views of your congregation during worship service.

NDI® cameras are an important new option as well. NDI is an IP protocol that allows for streaming to any number of devices on your local network. Features such as auto-discovery and multicast allow you to quickly and easily distribute video to multiple destinations over a single ethernet connection. For ultimate flexibility, user-friendliness, and future proofing, we recommend choosing an NDI-enabled camera.

Audio and Video Mixing
Mixing can be accomplished by using either hardware or software. OBS Studio and vMix are two of the more popular options for software mixing. Hardware options are numerous and should be selected based on your need. The BG-MFVS61-G2 is a great entry-level mixer that is suitable for nearly any small to medium-sized system. It features multiple HDMI, SDI, and analog audio inputs allowing you to mix an entire production.

Encoding and Uploading Your Stream

Once your production is mixed it’s ready to be streamed online. This is accomplished via a software or hardware-based encoder. When using software, you will need a capture device that is connected to the output of your video mixer (or camera output if using a single camera). A capture device will take your audio and video signals and convert them to USB. The USB is connected to a computer hosting your streaming software which then sends your stream to the internet.

A hardware encoder also connects to your audio and video outputs. Rather than converting it to a USB signal, it connects directly to the internet via an RJ45 connection for direct streaming without a computer.

Internet Connection
The final pieces to the puzzle are your internet connection and local network infrastructure. To utilize IP cameras successfully, you should have a modern router and network switches that can handle multicast traffic. Gigabit routers and switches are recommended. Insufficient bandwidth and network congestion are sources of the most common roadblocks when creating a successful stream. To stream in 1080p HD you should have a minimum upload speed of 5 Mbps from your internet provider.

Going Live

At this point you should have your equipment connected and tested. Log in to your streaming platform of choice, click the “Go Live” button, and stream away!

Now that you have a working knowledge of what is required, take a look at a few equipment packages put together by BZBGEAR’s expert sales team.
