The Beginner's Guide to Live Streaming for Houses of Worship
Request a call from our experts
Many houses of worship are now live streaming, bringing their live services to those unable to attend in person. A Live stream differs from a traditional live broadcast in that it’s distributed via Facebook Live, YouTube, and other web services. It is a powerful tool allowing houses of worship to reach the community.

With the large number of equipment and platform options, a newcomer can easily be overwhelmed. Fortunately, with a bit of expert assistance from BZBGEAR®, creating a live stream is easier than ever!
Live Streaming Equipment
The foundation of any successful live stream is the equipment used for recording audio and video. If your stream has poor audio and video quality, you will struggle to maintain your viewer’s interest and gain new followers—regardless of how powerful your message is.
Cameras
The most important thing to consider when purchasing equipment for a live stream is the quality of your camera. Beyond the obvious improvements in video quality, a good camera will have components and features that can eliminate the need for additional accessories while providing a better operator experience. The most simple and effective way to add production value to your stream is by including a second camera alongside a joystick controller and video switcher. This is essential for any high-quality stream. The ability to create and switch between multiple cameras and zoom angles can dramatically improve the viewing experience when utilized correctly.

Before choosing a camera, have a good idea of your existing infrastructure and how the camera will be used. Connection type (typically HDMI, SDI, or USB) will be determined by your Audio/Video needs and your and network infrastructure. Larger spaces will need a 20x or even 30x zoom lens to capture the desired shot.

NDI® cameras are an important new option as well. NDI is an IP protocol that allows for streaming to any number of devices on your local network. Features like auto-discovery and multicast allow you to quickly and easily distribute video to multiple destinations over a single ethernet connection. For the ultimate flexibility, user-friendliness, and future proofing we recommend choosing an NDI-enabled camera.

Audio and Video Mixing
Mixing can be accomplished by using either hardware or software. OBS Studio and vMix are two of the more popular options for software mixing. Hardware options are numerous and should be selected based on your need. The BG-MFVS61 is a great entry-level mixer that is suitable for nearly any small- to medium-sized system. It features multiple HDMI, SDI, and analog audio inputs allowing you to mix an entire production.
Encoding and Uploading Your Stream
Once your production is mixed it’s ready to be streamed online. This is accomplished via a software or hardware-based encoder. When using software, you will need a capture device that is connected to the output of your video mixer (or camera output if using a single camera). A capture device will take your audio and video signals and convert them to USB. The USB is connected to a computer hosting your streaming software which then sends your stream to the internet.

A hardware encoder also connects to your audio and video outputs. Rather than converting it to a USB signal, it connects directly to the internet via an RJ45 connection for direct streaming without a computer.
Internet Connection
The final pieces to the puzzle are your internet connection and local network infrastructure. To utilize IP cameras successfully, you should have a modern router and network switches that can handle multicast traffic. Gigabit routers and switches are recommended. Insufficient bandwidth and network congestion are sources of the most common roadblocks when creating a successful stream. To stream in 1080p HD you should have a minimum upload speed of 5 Mbps from your internet provider.
Going Live
At this point you should have your equipment connected and tested. Log in to your streaming platform of choice, click the “Go Live” button, and stream away!

Now that you have a working knowledge of what is required, take a look at a few equipment packages put together by BZBGEAR’s expert sales team. These packages combine some of our
